How to Choose a Hostel or PG in Lucknow: A Practical Checklist

Updated

A step-by-step checklist for students and working professionals choosing a hostel or PG in Lucknow: location, rent, food, safety and what to confirm before you pay.

Moving to Lucknow for college, coaching or a new job? The room you choose affects your budget, your travel time and your peace of mind for months. Use this checklist when you compare places.

1. Start with location, not rent

A cheap room far from your college or office costs you in travel time and fares every day. First mark where you need to be most days, then look within a comfortable distance.

  • University of Lucknow students usually look around Hasanganj, Daliganj, Nirala Nagar and Aliganj.
  • Coaching students often prefer Kapoorthala and Aliganj, or Hazratganj, because many institutes are located there.
  • Students of colleges on Faizabad Road generally look in Chinhat, Matiyari and Indira Nagar.
  • Working professionals with offices in Gomti Nagar commonly choose Gomti Nagar, Vibhuti Khand, Patrakarpuram or Indira Nagar.

Check how close the nearest metro station or bus route is, especially if you will travel after dark.

2. Hostel, PG or independent room?

  • Hostel: many residents, fixed rules and timings, mess food, usually a warden. Good if you want structure and company.
  • PG (paying guest): smaller, often in a family home or a managed building. Rules vary a lot from one owner to another.
  • Co-living: managed buildings with services such as housekeeping and Wi-Fi included, usually at a higher rent.
  • Independent room or shared flat: the most freedom, but you arrange food, cleaning and bills yourself.

3. Understand the full monthly cost

Ask the owner for the total, not only the rent:

  • Is electricity included, or charged by meter?
  • Is food included? How many meals, and on which days?
  • Are Wi-Fi, laundry and housekeeping included or extra?
  • How much is the security deposit, and under what conditions is it returned?
  • Is there a notice period or a lock-in period?

Write the answers down. Two places with the same rent can differ a lot in total cost.

4. See the room yourself

Photos can be old or selective. During a visit, check:

  • the actual room and bed you will get, not a sample room,
  • bathroom cleanliness and water supply, including hot water in winter,
  • ventilation, light and mobile network inside the room,
  • drinking water arrangement,
  • how many people share the room and the bathroom.

If you can, visit once in the evening and talk to a current resident.

5. Safety and rules

  • Is there a warden, guard or CCTV at the entrance?
  • What are the entry and exit timings? What happens if you are late?
  • What is the visitor policy?
  • For girls hostels and PGs, ask specifically who has access to the building and at what hours.

Parents may want the phone number of the warden or owner. Ask for it.

6. Food

If food is included, ask to see the weekly menu and, if possible, eat one meal before deciding. If it is not included, look for a tiffin service or mess nearby. Many tiffin services offer a trial meal before you commit to a monthly plan.

7. Before you pay anything

  • Meet the owner or manager in person and note their full name and phone number.
  • Ask for a written receipt for every payment, including the deposit.
  • Get the rent, deposit, refund rules and notice period in writing, even as a simple signed note.
  • Do not pay a "booking amount" online to someone you have not met for a room you have not seen.
  • Keep a copy of the ID you submit and ask how it will be used.
